Advice on communicating with players

Be specific

The following are examples of non-specific communication:

Kick the ball – Where? Should they just kick the ball away? Normally we want the players to pass the ball and only occasionally clear it, then it is normally best to clear it wide or out of play, not down the middle. In that case say “clear it out”.

You’re not trying – How? What should they do to try harder? Do you want them to run in and win the 50/50 ball, if so say “win the 50/50 ball”.
Be positive

It’s better to encourage a player and say what you would like them to do than to criticize them for what they have done. For example if a player dives into a tackle; instead of saying “Don’t dive in” its better to say “Hold them up next time”.

Avoid commentating

You are a coach not a commentator. A rolling commentary of the game is distracting for players and makes it difficult for you to observe and assess the game. Make positional adjustments, encourage players where appropriate and give your feedback during halftime and after the game when the players can concentrate on what you are saying.
Ensure you have their attention

Make sure the players are attentive and ready to listen to what you are saying. As a tip you could have the team kneel on one knee in a semi circle when you are talking to the group. This ensures you have their attention. If they aren’t ready to listen, don’t be ready to talk until they are.

The beautiful game

Football is the beautiful game. It should fun and full of emotion. Be sure to celebrate successes and don’t dwell on the losses. Players of all ages and levels play for the love of the game; and fun and joy are key.

Fair play

Playing fair makes the game safer and more enjoyable for all players. If you win playing fair it makes the success more rewarding.

•    Emphasise fair play with your players and make sure they all follow the rules

•    Respect the decisions of the referee and refrain from trying to influence their decisions

•    Don’t tolerate violence, dangerous play, cheating or unsporting behaviour.
