10th Grade Prems make Birkenhead Major Final
After two days of great football Western Springs 10th grade Rimu lost a tight final 1-0, it was a battle between to even sides and the game looked destined to end in penalties.
The turning point came on the stroke of halftime when Springs lost star left back Maddy Cooper to a bad knee injury. A reshuffle at halftime saw Carlos Boyd slot in to the left back role. Chances were few, and tournament top goal scorer and golden boot winner Jack Dymond was well marked by the Hamilton back three, given no room to unleash his pace. The only goal came deep in the second half, when from a well worked free kick, the ball was flicked in at the near post, giving goalkeeper Elliot Munford no chance.
This was only the second goal conceded in 280 minutes of football, testament to a collective defensive well lead by captain Flynn McGregor-Sumpter, who was outstanding all weekend. This was a collective team effort though and everyone played a major role, but the most pleasing aspect of this great achievement was the way the team conducted themselves on the pitch , playing the game in great spirit and sportsmanship, they are true credit to the club. It was a great end to very good season, roll on 09 !
