Junior Grades

For junior club grades 6-9th grade coaches generally referee the games and coach on the pitch. The rules are covered in the 6-7th grade coaches’ education. If you need more help with the rules contact the Junior Club Captain.

Youth Grades

In youth grades it is best if the coach does not referee the game. Ideally a parent/care giver or other supporter will referee for you. To help support this Western Springs AFC is happy to pay for that person(s) to attend Soccer2’s Club Based Referees course.

Club Based Referees

The Soccer2 Club Based Referee Programme allows nominated individuals to go through a course at Western Spring’s Club Rooms to become registered as a Club Based Referee (CBR). They are then entitled to referee any Federation match at their own club, or at an opposition club if the opposition club does not have either an appointed official or their own Club Based Referee.

Successful candidates for the course receive a certificate from New Zealand Soccer and an official CBR referee shirt, which they are expected to wear when officiating. In addition all Club Based Referees will have a registration card which they must show to the opposition team prior to kick-off.

People interested in becoming a Club Based Referee should contact their grade coordinator or the Junior Club Captain. Western Springs ARC will pay the cost of the course (which is normally $50) for any body nominated by a youth team coach.

The club will also facilitate the CBR Refresher course each year for those that have qualified as a CBR.
